Simple: backport support for Metro apps to Windows 7. I don't mean the entirety of the Metro UI, just support for app and perhaps a Start Screen launcher that could run as a separate application.
Touch support will be non-existent, but that doesn't matter since not all Windows 8 systems will support touch. I think that touch support will be in the minority for the entire lifespan of Windows 8, and Metro apps can be controlled with a keyboard and mouse. The apps that I've seen developed for Windows 8 so far -- and I think I've used pretty much all of them -- would work just as well in Windows 7, or even Vista for that matter -- but that was hardly a popular platform to begin with.
Opening up Metro apps to Windows 7 users would give developers a real reason to start developing. It decouples the success of these new style apps from the success of Windows 8 itself. Using Windows 7 as a platform for Metro apps would give it an instant user base of millions.
And that's the sort of thing that makes developers sit up and take notice. Developers are in short supply. Here are the skills and programming languages employers need. Given these constraints, we would have to wait for the release of Windows 9 to adopt Metro. Having Windows 7 be a second class Metro citizen would be perfectly fine. For example, it would be acceptable if the app ran in a window with the standard desktop chrome and only supported mouse and keyboard interaction.
It might not be the immersive, touch-enabled experience, but at least Windows 7 users would be able to run the app. Is there any chance this kind of "Metro Emulation Mode" backwards compatibility would be considered?
Are there any game developers microsoft is talking with? It might be a good idea to use windows8 on phones. But I dont see any benefits for desktop plattform. Besides there are so many diffuculties to solve for a developer:. I think it might be no problem for some, but currently there are very less windows8 users - a game developer would not have a choice but to develop two versions. And even worse to have a support team for each of these versions. And even worse this is just because you want to have a nice metro icon.
You know, on a users perspective there is no other difference in a 3d shooter for example. You click on the nice metro style icon and then the game has its own UI.
There is really no reason why windows7 apps have to be so "ugly" on the start page. Would be nice if you just could add somekind of xml to your win7 app and on Windows8 systems it will be used to style the buttons.
